Bateman, Henry Mayo (1887 - 1970)

Bateman studied art at Goldsmiths College and had his first drawings published in Scraps (1903) and Tatler (1904). He contributed to many publications, including Passing Show, London Magazine, Radio Times and Punch and became one of the highest paid cartoonists of his era. During World War II Bateman produced a series of posters for the Ministry of Health, including the famous ‘Coughs and Sneezes Spread Diseases’. Bateman became renowned for ‘The Man Who..’ series, the first of which, ‘The Missed Putt’, appeared in Tatler in 1912.
