Butterworth, George (1905 - 1988)
Aged 17, Butterworth began to work as a caricaturist and sports cartoonist on the County Express in Stockport. From 1932 he worked as ‘Gee Bee’ on the Daily Dispatch, drawing sports cartoons. When the Second World War broke out, Butterworth took over from Sam Wells as the paper’s political cartoonist and also contributed to the Evening Chronicle and Sunday Chronicle. His cartoon ‘Maltese Cross’ in the Daily Dispatch resulted in the island receiving that award in April 1942. Butterworth also illustrated Manchester United Football Club programmes for many years up and until the Munich air disaster. See Butterworth biography by Timothy S. Benson.
