Kent, John (1937 - 2003)

Kent emigrated from New Zealand to England in 1959, working in advertising before his Grocer Heath strip and "The Brothers" strip (dealing with the trade unions), was published in Private Eye in 1969. Kent is also well known as the author of the Varoomshka comic strip in the Guardian in the 1970s. Kent described Varoomshka as "the permanent link between absurdities": "A Miss Everyone who, unlike most people, manages to retain a sense of incredulity at all she encounters." The series continued as a feature in the Guardian until May 1977. From 1973 to 1975 Kent was guest cartoonist on the Sun, deputising for Rigby and Franklin.
