Lancaster, Sir Osbert (1908 - 1986)

At the suggestion of John Rayner, Features Editor of the Daily Express, Lancaster began drawing single column cartoons for the paper. Lancaster himself coined the phrase ‘pocket’ cartoons; and drew for the Daily Express from 1939 to 1981. The ‘pockets’ feature a case of memorable characters, including Maudie, Countess of Littlehampton, Canon Fontwater and Father O’Bubblegum. Lancaster was awarded the CBE in 1953 and was knighted in 1975.
