Searle, Ronald b.1920

Searle, Ronald b.1920

Captured by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore, Searle was a prisoner of war from 1942 to 1945, spending seven months labouring on the infamous Burma-Siam railway. On his return to Britain Searle began to work as a cartoonist for Tribune, the Daily Herald and the Sunday Express as well as theatre artist for Punch. He re-introduced caricatures to Punch after a hiatus of many years, including the famous ‘Heroes of Our Time’ series. Searle’s memorable creations include the St Trinian’s schoolgirls and Nigel Molesworth.
