Townsend studied at Lambeth School of Art where a fellow student was Leonard Raven-Hill. He contributed to several newspapers and magazine including Punch, The Daily Chronicle, The Graphic, The Tatler and the London Illustrated News. In 1905 Townsend became the first Art Editor of Punch. He was replaced by Frank Reynolds as Punch's Art Editor.
