Waite worked as an ‘entertainer’, as he categorised cartoonists for over 45 years. Born in New Zealand he came to London in 1951, a move he described as “a total leap into the darkness”. After freelancing for Punch and Men Only he became the Daily Sketch’s chief cartoonist. From 1966 to 1969 Waite worked for The Sun, then moved on to Mirror newspapers drawing cartoons with a stronger political content. Leaving the Mirror group in 1985 he rounded off his career as a business cartoonist for The Times, a post he held from 1987 to 1997.
