Webster, Tom (1886 - 1962)

Webster, Tom (1886 - 1962)

Webster was a self-taught artist who became renowned for his sports cartoons. He worked for the Daily Mail from 1919 until 1940 and his most famous creation was Tishy, the racehorse able to cross his forelegs whilst running. Tishy appeared in two animated films, one of which had a royal premiere at the Hippodrome. Other notable Webster characters were the Bloated Bookmaker and the Horizontal Heavyweight. Webster had a customised Daimler, fitted with an easel in the back, enabling him to start drawings as he returned to the office after a sporting event.
